Ethical Development practices and Partnerships – A Critical Resource

Session description: When we start a new project with partners in a different context, it is never truly a “new start.” Historically it has been academic experts from the Global North who have studied and interpreted the South, too often creating a situation where northern academics have “critiqued” and “assessed” while southern academics and practitioners have “served”.

This means that international partnerships are inevitably imbued with power relations and possibly the assumption that it is northern knowledge, practices, and good intentions that will lead transformations in the South. Without a clear recognition of that context, it is inevitable that existing inequities, injustices, and imbalances of knowledge and power, will continue to pervade our work. 

The Sustainable Futures in Africa (SFA) Network designed the Critical Resource for Ethical International Partnerships (DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/DJTN4) to help make explicit the practices and dynamics that underpin partnerships, to support the development of more equitable and ethical working relations. The resource has been taken up widely across HEIs, International Development Organisations, and Research Initiatives.

This session will focus on two aspects of partnership working that are explored in the resource: money and positionality. Participants will interact to reflect on experiences and perspectives and consider principles and best practices.

Research Impact - Making sense of the concept  across different contexts

Session description: 

The Participatory Futures project is exploring the international partnerships of five GCRF - UKRI funded research projects spread across Sub-Saharan Africa. 

Research Impact is a crucial component of any international development-related project - but what does this buzzword mean in different contexts, scales, and geographies? What are the boundaries of research impact? What counts as impact and for whom? 

Within the Participatory Futures project team, an impact ambassador team has been created to explore these questions and reflect on the five GCRF funded projects. In a panel discussion, they will share their perspectives on, and experience of research impact and its multiple meanings across contexts.
